Cycling of Matter - Part 1

Energy Transfer

  • Solar energy is transformed into cellular energy by photosynthesis
  • Energy cannot be created, or destroyed ONLY PASSED!
  • Most energy is lost as heat, but the rest is transferred to the consumer

Cycling of Matter

  • Certain types of matter exist in self-sustaining cycles, such as nitrogen and carbon
    • (this means that nitrogen and carbon can recycle themselves... kind of neat!)
  • Matter is continually cycling through ecosystems, but...

Organic Matter

  • is only the matter that forms a continuous cycle
  • Organic matter is matter that contains atoms of carbon and hydrogen. They often contain oxygen and nitrogen atoms as well!
  • C, H, sometimes O and N... = organic matter!
  • Proteins, sugars and fats are all examples of organic compounds. Your body is made up of these compounds.

Thursday, April 5th, 2012 Video Challenge:

  • Read the notes above. Find at least 3 videos on the internet that explain the topics clearly. You might search for some of the following phrases in YouTube:
    • Energy transfer
    • Photosynthesis
    • Cycling of Matter
    • Organic Matter
        • You could also choose to find a video about inorganic matter, the carbon cycle or nitrogen cycle, as we will look at those tomorrow.
  • In a Microsoft Word document. You MUST:
    • Paste the links to at LEAST 3 YouTube Videos
    • Write 1 paragraph FOR EACH VIDEO about why you chose that video (did you like that it was a cartoon? did you like that it explained things without complicated words?) and what you learned from the video.
    • On a seperate page, paste the links to 7 videos you watched, and explain why you DIDN'T like about them.

Whoever finds the BEST video(s) that impress Ms. Harris the most, will win a prize (given out on Tuesday!).
Good luck!
